Waiting on the Lord

Waiting on the Lord
by Lynda McClanahan

Dear Unity Friends,

Spring has arrived and what a busy time it is! I've been a gardener for many years. Even so, the demands of spring still manage to surprise. So much to do, so little time. Tilling the soil, starting seeds, emptying the compost bin, hauling manure, shopping for plants, and so much more. Sometimes as I pull the wheelbarrow to yet another bed, it feels like the work will never end. The more I do, the more there is to be done!

Feeling overwhelmed by tasks is common to many of us, I suspect. Emmet Fox writes that whatever work we are engaged in, all we have to do is "stop thinking about the difficulty, whatever it is, and think about God instead." How different my gardening becomes when the mind shifts from work to God. I put the shovel down for a moment, wait, and everything falls into place. I begin to understand why the psalmist wrote, "My soul waiteth for the Lord more than they that watch for the morning." When effort turns to praise, the whole garden sings! In this season of yard work, Spring cleaning, graduation parties and who knows what else, it's good to be reminded that our most important task is to "wait on the Lord." God is present in the midst of activity. All we have to do is notice.
