More on Positive Thinking

Dear Unity Friends,

I recently found a wonderfully thought-provoking little book titled, A Gift of Positive Thinking. It is written by Gill Farrer-Halls with beautiful, full color illustrations by Robert Beer. We often talk of the power of positive thinking. A zillion books and tons of motivational materials have been produced on the topic. Today I share some of Farrer-Halls thoughts on wisdom and positive thinking.

Skillful thoughts and action infuse your mind with wisdom. When you apply the wisdom of positive thinking to your actions, you change your unskilled behavior into positive actions...The power of positive thought might not move mountains, but thinking positively can move us forward into living a happier, more meaningful life. Wisdom is cultivating positive thoughts that in turn are the cause of positive actions. Folly is allowing negative thoughts to distract us, so w e act unskillfully and cause suffering.

If we want to have positive thoughts, we need to cultivate the cause of positive thoughts and eliminate the cause of negative thoughts. As thoughts arise in the mind, look at each one, and decide whether this thought is a cause of happiness or suffering.

The most positive thoughts are based on wisdom and compassion; they treat self as not different from others, and they seek to benefit all through positive, skillful actions.

This week, I invite you to ponder the connection of positive thinking and your own internal wisdom. Are your positive words coming from a place of compassion? Do you have ulterior motives for your actions? Are your thoughts reflecting your compassionate heart?

Namaste`
