Faith What Is It?

Rev. Robin Volker

Paul declared that faith was "the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen." (Hebrews 11:1 NRSV).  Charles Fillmore defined faith as "The perceiving power of the mind linked with the power to shape substance." (The Revealing Word).  With that said, do we know what faith is and how to get it?

Faith doesn't just happen; it is carefully planted, cultivated, and nurtured.  Faith is having a continual feeling of well-being, even in the face of evidence to the contrary.  In order to keep that faith strong and growing, we must continue to pray affirmingly, meditate deeply, and study intently.  We are called upon to put our faith into practice through creative activity, participation, and sharing of ourselves according to our spiritual inspiration.  Persistently, we guard our thoughts.  Consistently, we maintain our positive, expectant thinking.  And through discipline and commitment, we keep our alignment with Spirit.

As we focus on the outcome we desire, we think about "what ought to happen" and keep our minds from going to the tantalizingly dramatic place of "what ought not happen."  We often put forth more energy to stay in the negative thought than it would take to surrender and live by faith.  Even when the appearance is contrary to the outcome we seek, if we can place our faith in Spirit God within to guide us, direct us, and support us, anything in opposition to our desire will be only temporary.  Anything not of God has no leg to stand on and will crumble underneath the Truth of our faith in what is good and pure.
