A New Chance

Dear Unity Friends,

This week, I share with you the gratitude in my heart for the physical recovery of my step-son, Ricky, who was critically injured a year ago Tuesday (9-19-05) in an automobile accident in Charlotte, North Carolina. As a result of his injuries, Ricky's chances of survival were very slim. He was not expected to live, and if he did live, his prognosis was only for a vegetative state of existence.

After nine weeks in a coma, Ricky began to regain consciousness. It has been a slow, arduous journey. I am happy to report that a year later, Ricky is not only alive, but he is doing very well. He continues to work in rehabilitation to overcome the disabilities caused by the accident. His attitude is great, his smile and laughter are infectious, and he is determined to rebuild his life.

By all appearances and medical predictions, Ricky would have left this planet a year ago. The two people closest to him were unwilling to accept appearances. Both his mother and his father were committed to not giving up on their son. Their unwavering determination and undying love were inspiring to others.

Ricky's life was changed forever that fated night. And those closest to him have had to change and adapt as well. In Unity, we choose to look for the good (God) in everything that happens. You might ask, "Where is the good (God) in this?" Each person whose life has been touched by knowing Ricky has to answer that for themselves.

For me, I learned a lot about unconditional love through this experience. I saw the goodness (God-ness) and kindness in Ricky's family during this time of crisis, especially in his mom, his dad, his brother, and his sister. I learned to not accept appearances and that statistics are only meaningful if we give them meaning. I learned to not give up on those we love. Most recently, I experienced good (God) in my life when Ricky helped me bake cookies while Rick and I were visiting in Charlotte. Before the accident, Ricky would not have taken the time to stay in the kitchen with me while I was baking. Instead, he would have grabbed a handful of cookies on his way out the door, calling, "Thanks, Robin" over his shoulder.

Ricky has been given a new chance at life and is taking it. Every day you and I are given a new chance to give love, to show love, and to be love. I encourage you to not miss your chance today.

Namaste`
